About us

NHF's Harold Cares About Your Future: Pregnant and Parenting Teen Program, funded by the Harold Edelstein Foundation, is designed to prevent subsequent pregnancies among adolescents. Facilitated in the high school setting, the target population is first time pregnant or parenting adolescents. The program includes both individual services and peer group educational sessions. Core activities of the program revolve around a series of weekly workshops/presentations that will help each participant utilize appropriate health care for self and child, enhance parenting abilities, remain in high school with the goal of graduation/completion, prepare for employment by learning job search and interview skills, and avoid an unplanned subsequent pregnancy.

This program supports and collaborates with local education agencies and efforts to assist with advocating for pregnant and parenting teens to stay in school until graduation. To help reach these objectives, the National Health Foundation (NHF) facilitates the coordination of community services and resources on health care and nutritional education, parenting and child development and vocational and career planning. In partnership with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), NHF provides these services within select high school settings in South Central Los Angeles where there are high rates of teen pregnancy. Current participating high schools include Dorsey, Fremont, Jefferson, New Technology at Jefferson, Santee Education Complex, West Adams Preparatory and South Region High #2.

A grant from the AT&T Foundation supported the initial development of the web-based data collection system to monitor program participants and outcomes, provide ongoing resources and education, and maintain strong interpersonal connections. NHF developed an evaluation system that includes: capturing the quantitative data to monitor program objectives and outcomes; maintain participant contact information; and provide ongoing resources, education and information to program participants. By capturing this data, NHF has the ability to evaluate the impact of the program and continues to provide resources and referrals to participants after graduation from the program.

In 2011, NHF was awarded a new grant from the Harold Edelstein Foundation for the purpose of customizing the web-based monitoring system to include all Harold Cares grantees and their sites across Southern California. This evaluation tool serves as a centralized measure by which to report outcomes and track program participants. It also allows NHF and its partners the unique ability to provide integrated data information.
