Our youth, or community health liaisons are current high schools students at either Thomas Jefferson High School or Santee Education Complex. As Community Health Liaisons (CHL), their role is to be in the front line of the initiative. They have been trained in public health concepts to understand the reasoning behind a multi-pronged approach like that of the BUILD Health LA project.
Their work has included conducting surveys, key informant interviews, presenting their findings and providing recommendations on community health solutions.
Currently, our CHLs act as technical assistants for corner stores that are new to selling produce. Thanks to training by the Los Angeles Food Policy Council, our youth are trained in marketing, pricing and profitability and produce management that is centered around corner stores.
