STRATEGIC INITIATIVES
Uninsured Children & Families:
Addressing the staggering number of uninsured is undoubtedly one of the biggest challenges facing California and the nation. Of the growing 6.5 million uninsured Californians, more than one million are children. NHF has been and continues to be a leader in ensuring that all children and their families have access to appropriate healthcare coverage. Known for the high quality curricula it develops and information it provides, NHF is regarded as the preeminent training agency in Los Angeles County. Through the dissemination of comprehensive information about healthcare coverage programs statewide, trainings and technical assistance, NHF works to achieve the goal of reducing the number of uninsured families.
Chronic Disease Prevention & Management:
Over the past three years, NHF has worked on combating chronic disease in the Los Angeles area and is a founding member of the Chronic Disease Management Consortium (CDMC). The CDMC is a collaboration of Los Angeles area non-profit hospitals and organizations dedicated to providing their communities with free and culturally appropriate chronic disease prevention and management services. Members include California Hospital Medical Center, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, Good Samaritan Hospital, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Huntington Hospital and National Health Foundation. Current programs consist of the Type II Diabetes Screening and Education Program, the planning stages of a Heart Healthy Eating Lifestyle Program (for cardiovascular disease), and the replication of a family-based pediatric obesity intervention program.
Healthcare Delivery Systems:
NHF works with community partners and hospitals to help improve healthcare delivery systems using advanced web-based technologies, research, evaluation, e-surveys and operational leadership on pilot projects. Sample projects include: “Healthcare in Southern California: Perceptions versus Facts,” a report commissioned by the Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC) regarding the state of healthcare in Southern California; an analysis of hospital payer mix data also commissioned by HASC; the evaluation of the Healthy Births Initiative in collaboration with Los Angeles Best Babies Network funded by First 5 LA; the Southern California Patient Safety Collaborative (SCPSC), a partnership of Convergence Health Consulting, HASC and NHF supported by grants from the UniHealth Foundation, Blue Shield of California Foundation, and California HealthCare Foundation; and The Recuperative Care Project.
